I built this large-scale sculpture from found scrap steel fused with a life cast, splitting the figure apart to give physical form to a feeling I've carried through most of my intimate relationships—the way I lose my sense of self and disconnect from my own body in moments that call for presence. The head is split in half, separated by steel rods; the arm is severed from the torso—the body pulled apart at the seams the way it feels from the inside when I lose my center. It's autobiographical in the most literal sense: a survival strategy that slowly became a problem, a pattern I've repeated and only recently learned to heal, made visible and external so I could finally stand back and look at it. But circling the fragmented figure is a ring of energy, a band of connection and hope encircling the man in crisis, a reminder that even at the point of coming apart, something still holds him, still reaches back toward wholeness.
