I cast this relief sculpture in concrete, finished in a deep crimson red, the color most associated with blood and with love. My intention was to emulate the feeling of a temple built for sacred union. At the top, front and center, sits a life cast of my partner's and my hands, clasped together, holding the whole piece the way I feel we hold everything else. Below is a series of small windows into other kinds of devotion: a Buddha statue, casts of my own feet and my daughter's foot from when she was young, and a newspaper clipping of a man and woman together, found among my grandparents' belongings after they passed—one small piece of ephemera from a lifetime they'd saved, now folded into this shrine. The title comes from a song by my favorite band, Sisters of Mercy.
