I built this relief sculpture in cast concrete, finished with a green patina that gives it the look of aged bronze, assembling it like a shrine or totem devoted to some new, unnamed god—the god of the algorithm, perhaps, the one we feed with our attention. The surface is molded from computer parts and keyboard fragments, with a pair of hands, cast from my son, positioned at a keyboard as if permanently caught in the posture of doomscrolling that's become a kind of secular devotion. Above it all sits a buck skull crowned with horns, perhaps a reminder of the animal, embodied self we're trading away—isolation and disconnection exchanged for whatever the feed gives back. The piece is about that exchange rate: attention as currency, the toll it takes on the psyche, and the strange, totemic reverence we've built around devices that were supposed to connect us and have left so many of us more alone.
